kharābāt (/xaɹɑˈbɑt/)
(Persian) The place of ruins, the tavern. An important image of sufi poetry. Also the name of the historic musicians neighbourhood of Kabul. "Several hundred musicians lived there, in small mud-brick and wooden two-storey houses. The community of musicians
whose ancestors came from outside Afghanistan had been joined by local Afghan hereditary musicians. There is a rich folklore concerning the Kharabat which has hardly begun to be systematically collected. It was a fantastic place, with so many musicians squeezed into this small neighbourhood, some great masters amongst them."
